Movie Marathon!

What I'm watching:

Forbidden Planet
Sci-fi movie from 1956, starring Leslie Nielsen in a non-comedic role. Wow! Even though "50's era sci-fi flick" conjures up images of MST3K fodder, this one was actually quite good. It wasn't a cautionary tale about atomic energy, foreign peoples, or McCarthyism, as many of the films of this genre were. It was about something less dated and more scary. The sound effects and music (or, "electronic tonalities" as the credits described them) were very impressive. Also, ROBOT!!

Robby the Robot! He even obeyed Asimov's laws of robotics.

Theremin: An Electronic Oddysey
Documentary about the theremin, an electronic musical instrument which produces sounds with radio waves and is played by waving one's hands around the two antennae. It was invented by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, who was later imprisoned by Stalin but still lived to be 97! Clara Rockmore, a theremin virtuoso and diva, also has a lot of screentime. Clara Rockmore is awesome. She rocks the theremin, except in this case, "rock" is short for "Rachmaninoff."

Factotum
Matt Dillon plays a hot version of Charles Bukowski. Man, Bukowski drank a lot.

Do you see the resemblance? I didn't.

I'm Not There
Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, and two other guys play Bob Dylan. Interesting, but pretentious. Cate Blanchett was really, really great though. She nailed the post-electric, drugged-out, skinny and androgynous Dylan. She has this line where she sounds just like him: "83 shows? I can't DO 83 shows!" Haha! ...I guess you have to hear it.

Can you tell which one is the real Bob?

Next on my queue: Chocolat, (edit) Fantasia, and new House tonight. Yay! (edited more) New House was awesome! Yay yay!
