Practicing domesticity.

Every few years, I develop a mild case of bunny fever, in which I feel an overwhelming desire to pet, nurture, and lurrrve a rabbit. Bunnies, although unbelievably cute, are more demanding than other pets I've cared for, so usually I allow my bunny fever to subside on its own.

This time, however, I decided to indulge my bunny curiosity by volunteering at the local rabbit rescue -- Bunny World Foundation in Silverlake. This organization rescues bunnies being bred and sold illegally on the sketchy streets of downtown, painstakingly handfeeds and medicates them, then adopts them out. This labor of love is more of a war zone than a petting zoo -- high stress levels, medical emergencies, and the possibility of bunny death always looming. But, they've rescued 600+ and adopted out 300+ bunnies in a mere 17 months! Also, I approve of this fundraising calendar.

Volunteering here mostly consists of manual, domestic labor -- washing dishes, preparing vegetables, cleaning up. I got to use my cute apron, a wedding gift unworn until today! And at the end of my shift, the three of us (boss lady, another volunteer, and me) prepared lunch for ourselves and shared a meal together. It's hard work considering we're not paid, and I'm really not a domestic type. But working in this all female space is oddly satisfying for me. At some point, I'll be trusted to brush and feed the bunnies omg! Honestly, I can't tell if volunteering there is mitigating my bunny fever, or just making it worse. If my next post is an introduction of two new rabbits into my little menagerie, you'll have your answer. ;)
