Entertainment junkie.
For the last few weeks, the streets have been plastered with ads for the new seasons of Big Love and Flight of the Conchords. I had never finished the second season of Big Love, but the ads reminded me how much I liked the show! As far as FoTC, their album is hilarious but I had never seen any of the TV episodes. What better way to reward HBO for their effective advertising by spending a sick weekend catching up on old episodes!
What I'm watching:
Big Love, Season 2. Even though I managed to finish the season by consuming 7 episodes in 2 days, I do remember why I gave up on show for a while. I don't like Bill! He's totally willing to over-complicate his life and put his family in danger, just to get revenge on his arch-enemy. Later in the season, some new arch-enemies appear, but I don't care because I hate these arcs. What I really love about the show are the personal dramas -- teenagers struggle to reconcile their religious beliefs with their burgeoning sexuality; the wives make power plays with and against each other; the family fights for acceptance from judgmental monogamist mothers. Still undecided on whether I'll watch season 3 -- I'm just not sure the juicy polygamist drama can redeem the over-the-top arcs.
Flight of the Conchords, Season 1. Not only do these guys produce very clever comedy/novelty music, they're also really attractive guys with totally cute accents! The writing on the show is more quietly-amusing than gut-bustingly funny, but there are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments per episode. Mostly during the music videos. :D
Prime Suspect. This is easily the best police detective show I've ever seen. Helen Mirren stars as Detective Chief Inspector/Superintendent Jane Tennison in this Masterpiece Theatre series from the mid 90s. Each episode is 2 hours long, and one case/season comprises 2 episodes. There's lots of time to develop the characters and plotlines, the dialogue is really sharp, and the internal police drama is even more interesting than the murder mysteries. Compelling!
And finally, new episodes of House. Yay!
